【Photo Diary】 (3) Visit to Ethiopia and Uganda
Published on September 25, 2024
I would like to share with you some of the photographs taken during my visit to Ethiopia and Uganda from July 23 to 28, 2024, in my capacity as chairman of The Nippon Foundation and WHO Goodwill Ambassador for Leprosy Elimination.
[July 26, Kampala and Luwero District, Uganda]
With young farmers who just embarked on agricultural business.
ZAABTA is considered to be a success story out of the 14 One Stop Center Associations (OSCAs) where the staff train and supervise smallholder farmers on agricultural production, post-harvest management and marketing as well as facilitate the delivery and collection of agro-input/output for/from farmers.
“Twenty-eight years ago, I came (to Uganda) accompanied by the former U.S. President, Jimmy Carter and Dr. Norman Borlaug, who is also a Nobel laureate in agriculture. We met President Museveni and discussed how to help the farmers in Uganda to raise the production,” local media quoted me as telling the farmers and staff.
“By doing so, we did not want children to go to bed when they are hungry. Since then, members of SAA have worked together with the farmers and have perspired together with the farmers in order to accomplish that aim. Today, I was able to see the dramatic successes that you have achieved,” I said, adding: “I would like to see this expand to other parts of Uganda.”
