Applications Now Open for 2025 United Nations-Nippon Foundation Fellowship for Future Ocean Experts
For over 35 years, The Nippon Foundation has been committed to developing human capacity in the ocean sector globally. Partnering with international organizations, governments, NGOs and educational institutions, we have nurtured over 1,800 ocean experts from 156 countries and built a vast network linking them together. Our human capacity building programs are designed to create and nurture a new generation of ocean professionals who will provide leadership to tackle global maritime issues, including climate change, ocean acidification and marine pollution to mention just a few. The United Nations-Nippon Foundation (UNNF) Fellowship is one of our long-standing programs with the UN DOALOS (Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea) of the UN Office of Legal Affairs. Since 2005, 216 fellows from 87 nations have completed this program. Many of them are now leading successful careers as state policymakers and scholars at other ocean-related agencies. The program trains government officials and mid-level professionals mainly from developing countries in ocean affairs and the law of the sea, as well as related disciplines, including marine science. Fellows learn about international legal frameworks, key issues and best practices in ocean affairs, become familiar with the work of the United Nations and develop professional skills. The nine-month program consists of two phases. In Phase One, fellows spend the first three months at DOALOS at UN headquarters in New York. In Phase Two, they spend the next six months gaining in-depth expertise at an institution of their choice selected from 32 institutions around the globe that host UNNF fellows. Upon completion of the fellowship, fellows are expected to return to their home countries. The fellowship is fully funded for the duration of the nine months, with fellows to be given such benefits as monthly stipend, local transportation costs, return air tickets, visa processing fees, medical insurance, accommodation costs and a book allowance of $100 a month. Applications are now open for the 2025 United Nations–Nippon Foundation Fellowship. The deadline for applications is September 15, 2024.
