【Photo Diary】(4) 10-day tour of Switzerland, Sweden, the Philippines, Thailand and Bangladesh

Published on August 19, 2024

I would like to share with you some of the photographs taken during my 10-day European and Asian tour that took me to Switzerland, Sweden, the Philippines, Thailand and Bangladesh from May 27 to June 5, 2024, in my capacity as chairman of The Nippon Foundation and WHO Goodwill Ambassador for Leprosy Elimination.

Returning from Stockholm to Geneva, I attended the award ceremony for the 40th WHO Sasakawa Health Prize, held during a plenary of the World Health Assembly, the WHO’s decision-making body.

During the meeting at the historic Palais des Nations, which houses the UN office in Geneva, I reported to him that I successfully reached the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro in February to raise the banner atop Africa’s highest peak, just as I had promised I would when we met in January at the ceremony to jointly launch Global Appeal 2024 to End Stigma and Discrimination Against Persons Affected by Leprosy.
I said I planned to follow up by showing the same commitment to increasing my activities against leprosy in Africa and the rest of the world.

The prize was created by my late father, Ryoichi Sasakawa, in 1984 to recognize individuals and organizations engaging in innovative efforts to improve people’s health and achieve greater health equity through the promotion of primary health care.

Dr. Mashire was recognized for her role in the development and implementation of Botswana’s prevention of cervical cancer strategy involving traditional leaders and the community at large. We highly respect her work for the embodiment of primary healthcare through her invaluable and diverse activities.
