Webinar Video Available: Japan Studies -- Broadening the Scope: New Possibilities through Cross-discipline Collaboration

Published on November 18, 2025

On November 14, 2025, The Nippon Foundation Scholars Association (TNFSA) hosted an online discussion on cross-discipline collaboration in Japan studies.

The recording is now available here.

The field has undergone seismic changes in recent decades, leaving many scholars understandably concerned about the future. At the same time, numerous important and impactful actors in Japan studies continue to focus on their own programs. While this contributes to a diverse ecosystem, greater mutual awareness and cooperation could benefit the field as a whole.

This is the second session in our series designed to bring together participants from all levels of Japan studies—from early-career researchers to organizational leaders—to examine shared challenges, foster dialogue, and encourage new collaborations.

While the first event focused on next-generation career paths and was largely a discussion among some of Japan studies' newest professionals, the November webinar will feature mid-career experts and will consider the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in expanding the field's reach. It aims to highlight how partnerships that reach across fields can generate fresh perspectives and new frameworks for Japan studies.

Moderator:

・Patrik Ström (European Institute of Japanese Studies, Stockholm School of Economics)

Panelists (Alphabetical):

・Beata Bochorodycz (Institute of Oriental Studies, Adam Mickiewicz University)

Looking ahead, the third webinar in this series will be held in January, focusing on:  Networks, funding, and institutions (Jan 2026)
